The Student Clinic for Immigrant Justice, or SCIJ, is an organization that provides free legal representation to asylum seekers while also advocating for immigrant justice. The SCIJ offers volunteer opportunities for WSU students and gives them an overview of immigration law and history, preparing students to serve the immigrant community.
SCIJ’s partnerships with Brown University and UMass Boston allow for further student involvement and collaboration between the three colleges. On top of that, the SCIJ offers immigration advice and legal assistance at the Worcester Public Library in collaboration with local organizations and law firms such as Alex M. Mooradian Esq., Catholic Charities Worcester County, Celadon Law, Central West Justice Center, and Lilly Legal.
There are a number of ways to get involved with the SCIJ. For those wishing to volunteer, the Urban Studies department regularly runs UR-442: Immigration Law Practicum for students who complete a 40-hour SCIJ training program. For those seeking support, the SCIJ also holds community gatherings on the first Wednesday of each month at 18 Chestnut Street; all, with the exception of outside agencies, are welcome.
